Remember, like a million years ago, when I slapped together a bunch of Adventure Time art into a wallpaper I called “The Many Faces of Finn?” To date, that post has scored my blog more hits than any other blog entry I’ve done here at Enemy of Peanuts. In short, that little wallpaper I whipped up is kinda popular on the internets. So popular, in fact, that it’s just received its own bit of fan art at the Adventure Time tumblr!

Pretty cool! Nice to see that my early adoption of all things Adventure Time has now spawned fan recognition of its own! Many thanks to Erica and Lizzie for choosing “The Many Faces of Finn” to demonstrate their chalking skills!

Today—August 28, 2010—is the first ever International Read Comics in Public Day. Coinciding with the birthday of legendary comics artist Jack “The King” Kirby, the event was created by Brian Heater and Sarah Morean of The Daily Cross Hatch and encourages people to make themselves visible to the general populace while enjoying some sequential storytelling. Here’s a bit more information from the official Read Comics in Public Day Web site…

The concept is fairly simple: we’re asking that everyone take an hour or two out of their day on August 28th to read a comic book in a public setting—a park bench, a beach, a bus, the front steps of your local library (we do ask, however, that you be mindful of local loitering laws). Let strangers see you reading a piece of sequential art.

Take to the streets. Be proud. If someone asks what you’re reading, say, “a comic book.”

So, being a beautiful and sunny Saturday in Portland, Jessi and I loaded up with some comics and headed out to read them in the open air over lunch and coffee.

Jessi catches up on "Buffy."

Reading Chris Golden, Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck's "Baltimore" at Ken's Artisan Bakery.

Flora, fauna and funny books.

Coffee and comics: A winning combo.

I used to love reading comics and graphic novels on my commute into New York City or on my lunch breaks in the Big Apple. Oddly, since moving to the Rose City, I haven’t ended up out and about reading comics as frequently as I’d like. It’s nice that Read Comics in Public Day kicked my butt a bit and got me back out there. I love comics over lunch!

Kudos to Brian and Sarah for getting this event off the ground! It was fun and a great excuse to spend part of my Saturday nerding out in public! Saturday isn’t over yet, so grab a comic and get out into the world and give it a read! Good times!Similar Posts:

Much like the most excellent issues of Star Wars Tales I recently came across, my office area move and the “free table” in the Dark Horse break room have been great resources for finding interesting older comics from my employer. So, as I read through these gems—issues of Dark Horse Presents, Star Wars comics and Dark Horse crossovers—I figured I’d scan in memorable comics moments as I come across them. A week ago, I was reading the first issue of Superman/Aliens II: God War written by Chuck Dixon, penciled by Jon Bogdanove with Kevin Nowlan on inks and Dave Stewart on colors, when I stumbled across this ridiculously badass moment sure to please fanboys who aren’t already familiar with it—and act as an enjoyable refresher to those who have. So, please enjoy Darkseid of Apokolips’ encounter with an Alien facehugger!

"Hm." (Please pardon the blotchy scan.)

Published in May 2002, the first two issues of this miniseries show Superman leisurely visiting New Genesis while a ship rife with Alien eggs crash lands on Apokolips. Darkseid discovers the eggs, impregnates his men with the beasts and sends them to attack New Genesis—of course, the Aliens then burst from the chests of Darkseid’s men and raise all sorts of hell for Big Blue and the New Gods. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to track down issues #3 and #4 in freebie piles to complete the story, but the first two issues are certainly chock-full of classic crossover action. Either way, Darkseid crushing a facehugger: awesome!Similar Posts:

Sometimes you stumble across a comic that’s so rad it makes you feel intense shame for not previously being aware of its existence and totally in love with it. Today, I found that Star Wars Tales is one of those comics.

Last week, a number of us from Dark Horse’s marketing department moved to new desks. The moving process was a great excuse to clear out and clean a few areas that had been previously covered with anything from old comics and publicity posters to boxes full of legal envelopes and other office supplies. While flipping through a box of old comics, I found 17 issues from Star Wars Tales 24-issue run and quickly discovered they are extremely awesome!

A humor compilation book, Star Wars Tales features ridiculous amounts of talented people writing hilarious tales featuring beloved Star Wars characters. Let’s take issue #20 as a prime example of why this title was tremendously great…

First, behold this glorious Tony Millioniare cover!

Glorious!

Now, check out the line up on this book! It features…

Tony Millionaire writing and illustrating a Jar Jar Binks/Moby Dick mash up.

A Jason short starring Darth Vader.

A Jawa-centric tale by Bob Fingerman.

“Luke Skywalker: Detective” by Rick Geary.

A wampa short by Jim Campbell.

Two Peter Bagge stories centering around characters from the prequels.

A Chris Eliopoulos story starring Han, Leia, C-3PO and some ewoks.

“Young Lando Calrissian” by Gilbert Hernandez.

And, my favorite, “Melvin Fett” by James Kochalka!

This is too perfect for words.

Sadly, this title is no longer being published, nor is it collected in some of the snazzy Dark Horse Omnibuses like most of our other Star Wars titles. However, most of the issues are still available for purchase at Things From Another World, so snag those puppies while you still can! Great, great stuff!

I mean, any comic that features rhyming story names on the front cover like this is a must buy!

Zero sarcasm, "Lando's Commandos" makes me so happy!

From time to time, I’ll probably begin scanning in and posting some of this series’ most excellent panels. Prepare yourselves!Similar Posts:

Last year, I had the pleasure—and honor—of utilizing my luxuriant upper lip to help combat men’s cancer by raising funds and raising awareness about men’s health as a participant in Movember—the month formerly known as November during which men grow moustaches as a visual aid to help with the aforementioned fund raising for men’s cancer research. I helped to raise, alongside my compatriot Matthew Lubicky, over $1,100 for the cause! It was a good effort and the testicles and prostates of the world are a little bit safer for it.

Movember 2009 was a blast, so I decided long ago that I’d by ‘staching it up come the penultimate month of 2010—no real surprise to folks who follow this blog or my Twitter. This year, my goal is to raise over $1,000 by myself, and hopefully a great deal more with a team of most excellent mustachioed men. Interested in getting involved—especially if you’re in Portland—drop me a line at jimgibbons1[at[gmail[dot]com! I’m hoping to rope in a lot of friends, co-workers and family, but I’ll take willing volunteers as well!

With the mo’ month fast approaching, and me needing a shave, I decided to try out a few moustache styles in anticipation for the big event. I went with a pretty traditional ‘stache last year, so here are a few variations I’m contemplating for Movember 2010. Feedback is greatly appreciated!

What mo' is this?!

I call it The Biker.

Though the horseshoe style moustache has actually gained popularity over the past few years, I think its frequency among the non-Movember community is a bit of a turn off for me. It’s a fun ‘stache, but I almost feel like my mo’ will lead to more questions that will allow me to spread the good word if it looks more out of place. The hipper the ‘stache, the less random people wonder why and thus, the less people hear about Movember. That’s my take at least. Thoughts?

The next mo’ cleans it up a bit, but still retains some wildness…

More cowboy-esque...

...I call this one The Western.

In my humble opinion, Sam Elliot wears the greatest moustache that ever lived. Hollywood and history are full fantastic ‘staches, but I think Sam trumps’em all. That in mind, I tried to give a true cowboy mo’ a shot with this. Disregard the Indiana Jones costume fedora I’m sporting instead of a ten gallon hat, that’s a ‘stache of the Old West. Like it?

And the last mo’ I tried on for size…

A gentlemen's 'stache.

British Imperialism, I've stolen your moustache!

This last ‘stache, which I’m calling The Brit, cracked me up. It’s only as wide as my mouth, and something about that made me break out in laughter every time I saw my reflection in a window or mirror. It’s kind of hilarious, but I also kind of loved it! Thoughts? Come Movember, I may go goofy and sport this mo’ for 30 days.

In conclusion, I’m—obviously—quite excited for Movember this year. You can see my donation site here and check out the homepage for more info. If you’re interested in joining a team, drop me a line. And please, start thinking about donating. We’re months away, so put $5 or $50 aside now and then spread the love this Movember!Similar Posts:

Back in May, after substituting Wheat Thins for a more substantial lunch due to extreme busy-ness, I began a conversation on Twitter about crackers. My hypothesis: While the Wheat Thin might not be the best cracker in the world, it is undoubtedly the most addictive—in a good way, of course. Surprisingly, many of my followers on Twitter are—apparently—avid cracker fans and I was soon defending my position against suggestions like Cheez-Its (Too heavy!), Triscuits (Too hearty!), Pita Chips (They’re chips!) and Chicken in a Biskit (Too rich!). Make no mistake, all the suggestions I received were for tasty snacks and delicious crackers, but few—if any—rise to the level of addictiveness that Wheat Thins achieve.

An hour or so after my Twitter debate, I received an e-mail from someone working on Wheat Thins’ publicity team. Wary but willing to give someone from the brotherhood of PR the benefit of the doubt, I found that Wheat Thins was jazzed to see me talking about their crackers and wanted to send me a box. I verified that the e-mail was in fact from the company—as opposed to some bizarre assassination attempt—and said I’d be happy to receive of box of delicious, crackery goodness. A few weeks later, a box of Wheat Thins arrived. It was 100 percent edible, tasty and thankfully unpoisoned, thus giving me further proof that I should voice my opinion about things I love.

I thought that was the last I’d heard from the PR people with Crunch Is Calling (Wheat Thins’ Twitter account), until this morning when I received an e-mail that read…

Hello,
Hope you enjoyed the Wheat Thins we sent you. Because you are a truly awesome aficionado of snacks, you’ve been selected as one of 100 people to try Wheat Thins Crunch Stix, a brand new snack that isn’t even on shelves yet.

What are Wheat Thins Crunch Stix, you ask? They’re tasty toasted whole grain sticks that are shaped to MAXIMIZE CRUNCH in a new box that’s shaped to maximize your snacking experience (oh yeah, we said it).

You should be receiving Wheat Thins Crunch Stix in the next few days. If you like what you crunch, tell us on Twitter @crunchiscalling, on Facebook.com/wheatthins and/or use the hashtag #wheatthincrunchsstix to let us know what you think.

First, it’s pretty rad to be confirmed as a “truly awesome aficionado of snacks.” Second, being among a select group of folks who get to try an as-yet-unreleased snack food?! I think I can deal with that.

When I got home from work today, my speedily-delivered Wheat Thins Crunch Stix had arrived…

Like savory and sweet pretzel sticks made of whole grain Wheat Thin!

Wheat Thin Crunch Stix are pretty damn tasty. Crunchy whole grain goodness with a salty intro and a sweet finish, these bad boys are every bit as addicting as your favorite flavor of Wheat Thins. As far as snacking location goes, I’d imagine these would be excellent on a car trip or filling out an appetizer spread at a shindig.

About the length of a pretzel stick and a bit wider…

My hand's kinda big, so take that into consideration.

…I’d say any cracker or crunch-food fan has to give these a try. When they hit shelves, I’d recommend picking up a box. Oh, but the box…

The biggest flaw of the Crunch Stix has got to be the “new box that’s shaped to maximize your snacking experience.” Essentially a wide-mouth cracker box…

On-box explanation of how to make your Stix container a bowl.

…the instructions tell you to fold back the box’s top flaps to make it into an easier-to-grab-from snacking receptacle. This design is unnecessary and ridiculous. If you have a problem getting your hand into a box of crackers, you need to lay off the crackers. I’m a casual host, but if your party features a Crunch Stix box as a serving tray, you better be holding your get-together in a dorm lounge. Put this snack sticks in a cup or a bowl and recycle the box, there’s no need to make it wide enough to wedge five fists in. The folding method shown on the box hardly keeps the box flaps out of the way, as well. Lastly, and most importantly, this box design prevents the box from being closed when you’re done eating. Closing cardboard flaps might not keep your snacks fresh, but a container that can’t close is kinda silly. Bag the new box, Wheat Thins, Crunch Stix don’t need the fancy packaging.

"Are you laced with something, Stix? How'd you get so addictive?" (Please pardon the sweat. It

All things considered, Wheat Thins Crunch Stix are a flavorful and very addictive snack food. Give them a shot, and do try to eat in moderation!

———
Thanks for sending along the early sample, Crunch Is Calling! And thanks for not poisoning them!Similar Posts:

Job well done, Mr. Wright!

I won’t take your time rattling off a lengthy diatribe about how great “Scott Pilgrim” was nor will I list the innumerable reasons you should make every effort to go see it multiple times. After working in entertainment journalism, it’s safe to say I became a bit jaded with movies. (Full disclosure, ludicrous New York ticket prices didn’t help the situation.) I spent months gobbling up the hype around different projects, regurgitating it into boring news articles and almost always being let down be the final product. Instead of getting excited by movies like I once did, I just ended up being curious or interested but never really thrilled beyond that. This is not to say that I haven’t seen some great movies in the last few years, I just haven’t been filled with child-like enthusiasm before seeing them like I experienced up until college nor have many films left me amped like a teenage Mountain Dew bender by what I’d seen on the screen.

Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim (The books upon which the film was based.) filled me with a nostalgic enthusiasm for video games and music that energized me so much I found it hard to sit still while reading them. The previews and press for “SP Vs. The World” were some of the first pre-movie promotions that filled me with legitimate excitement in a long time. Simply, the film had a tall order to fill.

Ka-Pow!

I can’t remember the last time I walked away from a movie as pleased, as excited and as enthused as I did yesterday after seeing “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.” I haven’t had the desire to see a movie twice—while still in theaters—since college, but I’d happily go see “Scott Pilgrim” again right now. I’m pretty sure the last time I was this thrilled with a flick after leaving the theater was when I saw “Hot Fuzz.” Maybe Edgar Wright just pushes all the right buttons for me as a movie-goer. Maybe this film was just all sorts of good cut together into a near-perfect hour and 53 minute block of goodness. Maybe you should go see it for yourself and find out. I sincerely doubt you’ll be disappointed. Similar Posts:

I went to my first San Diego Comic-Con three weeks ago. Long story short, it was a work-filled, more or less sleepless, alcohol-infused 6-day bender of nerdiness. Long story even shorter, I had a blast.

Before this year, my history with Comic-Con primarily involved me hearing a lot about the show from afar, first as a fan and later as an online news editor. I always ended up being the guy who spent Comic-Con thousands of miles away behind a computer. Two years ago, Josh Wigler and I, alongside 24 ice cold Yuenglings, spent hours drinking and editing news from armchairs in his Brooklyn apartment. Last year, I followed the news online from my abode in New Jersey—nothing special compared to actual attendance. When I began working in comics, I heard horror stories and epic adventure tales about Comic-Con and the maddening sensory overload experienced at such a massive event. I suspected all the stories I heard were rife with hyperbole. Surely, it seemed, no single event could live up to the craziness with which people boasted about Comic-Con, right?

Today is the first day I actually feel like I’ve full recovered from the con. (I began writing this about a week ago, turns out I still had some more catching up to do. Today is the first day blogging seems like a good plan.) It’s a fun convention, but it’ll wreck you physically and mentally for while. Also, Comic-Con left me with a ton of work to catch up on, so I’ve been super busy as my mind and body have healed up after the onslaught that was Comic-Con. Now that I think I’m ready to remove the metaphorical bandages, I’m going to shrug off my blogging rust with a recap of my personal highlights and odd stories from the show.

Here we go…
-I saw Pauly Shore wandering the show floor on Thursday. Later at the surreal IGN party, I saw Pauly again. I was tempted to go up and say hello, as I legitimately enjoy Shore’s films, but he was the most upset looking guy I’d ever seen at a party. I’m probably a good 70 pounds heavier and 7 inches taller than him, but I was sure he would have punched me in the face if I had approached him, so… I didn’t. (In fact, looks like he did try and fight some people at CCI.) Still, it was crazy to see Pauly freakin’ Shore in person!

I did not try to weasel The Weasel.

-The IGN party on Thursday was a trip in the most ’70s-esque sense of the word. It was the first party this Midwesterner had ever been to where a list of VIP names determined who got in to the party and who was left on the curb. It was also the first time I was on the list for such an exclusive event. I’m one for one, folks! That average can only go down… Anywho, this party featured free booze on a rooftop Hard Rock Cafe bar and an appearance by Sylvester Stallone. Pretty nuts. Swank is the word people—or swanky. Swanky works too.

-As Dark Horse Editor Dave Marshall, Dark Horse Director of Custom Programs Nick McWhorter and I enjoyed this super swanky IGN shindig, I realized at one point that the red-headed chick from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” was sitting right behind Dave. While this party made me realize I’m definitely not cut out for the LA lifestyle, it was pretty cool to be hobnobbing around folks I’d seen in major motion pictures.

This girl. Much more attractive in person than in this picture.

-Later, when I went to the bathroom, I saw some dude chatting with a girl in a bikini about how she needed to be ready to go on stage early… because she was a background dancer for Big Boi and he was performing at the Marvel versus Capcom party next door. Even later, from afar, I witnessed Big Boi rocking a rooftop stage… have I mentioned it was a crazy night? Well, prior to seeing Big Boi, the craziest of crazy things happened…

-The IGN party was sponsored (or co-sponsored) by Sly Stallone’s new movie “The Expendables.” At the party, IGN launched their Action Hero Hall of Fame with Sly being the first inductee. Before they presented the award, Sly’s co-stars from “Expendables,” took the stage. So… I’m on a roof top bar, drinking free beer and Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin all take the stage to say a few words about Stallone. But wait, it gets better! When “Stone Cold” grabs the mic, he does a little spiel and before saying (not an exact quote, but pretty close) “If you think Sly Stallone is the greatest action hero in the history of movies, GIVE ME A HELL YEAH!” I raised my free beer, yelled “Hell Yeah!” and started laughing to myself as I’d—apparently—just reverted to my 7th grade self. It was goofy but pretty damn incredible as well. I loved it. Stallone took the stage after that, which was pretty cool, but after that “Hell yeah” I as pretty set for the evening.

-I walked by Joe Lo Truglio in my hotel bar. He had a beard.

-I saw Guillermo Del Toro enter an elevator in my hotel.

-I saw Morena Baccarin walking her tiny dog through my hotel lobby. She was wearing big sunglasses and her hair was bleached blonde and spiked, but it was definitely her. Since “V” began, I’ve commented a bunch of times to Jessi about how freakishly thin Baccarin has gotten compared to her days as the curvaceous Inara on “Firefly.” She’s definitely thin, and taller than I imagined, but she doesn’t appear malnourished in person—which is a good thing and totally random. This sighting, by the way, I think fully solidified how fucking crazy Comic-Con was for me. The show floor and the panel rooms within the convention center are their own brand of sensory overload, but it doesn’t stop there. I left the show floor after a long day and was going to drop my bag off in my room. The hotel bar was so loud it was hard to think, the entire lobby area was packed full of people and I turned the corner and an actress from one of my favorite TV shows of all time (“Firefly,” not “V.”) is walking her dog through my hotel. It’s surreal moments like that which make Comic-Con hard to explain, but also pretty darn great. There’s a more profound way to get this point across, but that’s the problem with Comic-Con. You’re so fried from the magnitude of it that the unique quality of all these little insane moments doesn’t quite sink in.

-I saw Seth Green run, unnoticed by anyone else, down an aisle on the show floor and wondered if he could make it through so speedily if he weren’t wearing a hat.

-At the Dark Horse booth, I got a chance to meet and chat with Cole Haddon, who is writing the upcoming comic “The Strange Case of Hyde” and to go with the script he wrote for it’s film counterpart “Hyde.” It’s always cool to chat with a writer who’s enthusiastic about his work, but getting to nerd out with Haddon about the coolness of Magnus, Robot Fighter was a particular treat. During the conversation, Cole pontificated about how awesome a Magnus movie would be (Yeah, it’d be extremely awesome!) and then ran me through an opening scene for this yet-to-exist movie that he said he’d love to write. Cross your fingers, folks, because—trust me—you want to see a Cole Haddon-scripted Magnus movie!

-Over the past year, I’ve e-mailed the fetching Felicia Day—writer and star behind the webseries “The Guild”—pretty regularly about doing interviews to promote the three-issue Dark Horse comic tie-in to her series. Always easy to work with, I was curious to see if the sweet nature in which Felicia conducts herself with via e-mail and in interviews was legit. It absolutely is, that girl’s a class act! At the con, I waved Felicia through a crowd to get her to the Dark Horse booth for a “Dollhouse” signing. When she made it through the masses waiting to meet her, she peeped down at my badge, saw my name and immediately reached for a handshake, saying “Jim! Oh my gosh, good to finally meet you face-to-face.” I’m paraphrasing what she actually said here (memory’s hazy at this point, on quotes at least), but the point is that she recognized my name and was super friendly and nice. I’ve generally had really good experiences with celebrities and comic creators in person, but Felicia was particularly pleasant—she deserves all the success she’s had over the past few years and that she still has coming. It’s really great when exceedingly nice people are doing well in the world. Go read The Guild and watch the webseries!

Felicia Day on the cover of Dark Horse's "Dollhouse" comic.

The rest of Comic-Con was great thanks to many people I work with regularly as a Publicity Coordinator at Dark Horse Comics…
-Meeting Marc Benardin in person and getting to gush about how much I love The Highwaymen was fun.

-As always, it was great to share drinks with the captain of Comics Alliance Laura Hudson.

-I finally got a chance to meet Jonah Weiland, head honcho of CBR, and he bestowed upon me a kazoo… much like the one LeVar Burton has in this video interview… an interview I coordinated, by the way. PR powers, activate! Also, CBR’s Senior Editor Stephen Gerding is a rad and hilarious man! And reporter extraordinaire, Shaun Manning is a dude among dudes indeed! Good times!

-And of course it was great hanging with the clowns who do The Cool Kids Table, my main man Josh Wigler, the hilarious and bearded Justin Aclin and other fellow Wizard alum—rad folks!

Ok, time to get this long overdue post up. Comic-Con International… it’s a crazy, crazy event. Get out to it if you have a chance, it’s an experience! I loved it. I hated it. But most of all, I lived it. Till next year, Comic-Con! Similar Posts:

One would expect a comic by the masterful Jack Kirby about a race of space gods, a population of hideous evil mutants and a small clan of immortal super humans to be mind blowing, but would you expect Eternals to be racy as well?! Ripped the pages of issue #5, take a gander at this exchange!

The dark haired woman is the Eternal known as Sersi. The red-clad hero, her fellow Eternal: Makkari. (Sorry about the blurred image. I'm scanning from the hardcover omnibus.)

Did you see it? Look closer, fair reader…

She did what now?

Obviously, I know what Kirby was going for here—that Sersi had repelled a few Deviants with her powers—but the phrase used certainly makes for an awkward panel. Reading older comics is a ton of fun, but when you stumble upon a phrase that doesn’t quite stand up to the ravages of time—like this one—it certainly makes reading old comics funny as well.
