Stumptown Comics Fest is an excellent comic, small press, and art convention in (as of this weekend) sunny Portland, Oregon. Here are some examples of the rad stuff you can get if you attend this awesome show!

STCF 2013: The Haul

From left to right, top to bottom…

Dungeon Quest by Joe Daly and The High Window by Raymond Chandler. Ok, ok, I bought these at Powell’s the weekend of the festival, but I’m counting them.

Vic Boone: Malfunction Murder by Shawn Aldrige and Geoffo, generously gifted to me by Mr. Aldridge.

A Trekker: The Train to Avalon Bay publicity postcard and a Trekker introductory ‘zine from my main man Ron Randall, who’s promoting Mercy St. Clair’s return in Dark Horse Presents, as well as the gigantic and awesome upcoming Trekker Omnibus.

Pizza Gun Volume 1 from the fellas at Pizza Gun, Inc, because I love pizza. They admitted the book had little to nothing to do with pizza, but… what the heck, right?

Model Student by Jake Bell and Joe Bowen, which I think I stole from Patrick Thorpe‘s office instead of getting at the convention, but it was in my bag at the end of the weekend, so… counting it!

Two samplers of Motorcycle Samurai by Chris Sheridan of Powderkeg Press. Pretty sure Chris gave these to Scott Allie to give to me at Emerald City Comicon, but again, they were in my bag at the end of the convention and I caught up with Chris on Sunday, so… counting them!

A free Seattle-centric comics newspaper I received when I made a purchase from Gnartoons. More on that below…

A print featuring a bunch of endangered species from Pony Club Gallery.

Issues #1 and #2 of Kinoko‘s The Epic of Gilgamesh, plus a cool Happy New Year snake postcard from her, as well.

Devastator #7 by The Devastator based on the fact my buddy Brett White (who was visiting Portland all the way from NYC) was randomly connected to the creators via Upright Citizen’s Brigade/improv comedy connections. The book was also nominated for a bunch of Stumptown Awards, which is always a ringing endorsement.

Pizza Nearth and Hot Dog! comics from Gnartoons/James the Stanton, who I discovered is my buddy and expert designer Tony Ong’s roommate. Small shows are fun for that exact reason. You get to support friends and friends of friends, sometimes accidentally!

A cute cat greeting card from Fickle Hill Letterpress.

This was Katie’s first show and she’s responsible for the cute cat card (natch!), the endangered species print, and the uber awesome, “I’m a classics nerd so I’m super excited about them” Epic of Gilgamesh issues. It was cool having a fresh set of eyes on a convention that I love. It led to me seeing some stuff I would have overlooked. That’s the moral of the story, folks. Even if you know comics, bring your non-comics people to shows. They’ll help you find some awesome stuff you’d otherwise overlook!

I’m not a writer.

I can write. I’ve been paid to write. But I know writers. Real writers. Sit down and type for hours because they have to writers, agonizing over every word writers, write or go crazy writers… And I’m not one of them.

Still, that doesn’t mean I don’t have a story to tell.

For years, I’ve compiled ideas, half-scripts, story arc notions, and other odds and ends, knowing that one day, writer or not, I’d need to tell a story. I’ve managed to find a way to work as a storyteller for a living, helping to cultivate stories as a comic book editor, and it’s a dream come true. I help writers and artists with stories everyday, and I think I’m pretty good at it. But, it’s been a long time since I’ve been on the other side of things. It’s easy to see what’s wrong with a story when you haven’t spent hours writing or drawing it. It’s easy to pick things apart from outside. (Well, easier, at least.) So, in an effort to become a better editor and scratch that faint but nagging itch that I need to tell some sort of story, I’ve decided to write something. I’ve learned so much about comics and storytelling in my time as an editor, my hope is I can learn even more by trying my hand at another part of the process.

Thankfully, totally rad ink slinger Andrew MacLean and colorist extraordinaire Ryan Hill have agreed to lend their immense talents to my meager efforts in this learning exercise. And I think it’s gonna be a pretty fun exercise to witness… which is exactly the plan.

At some point this year, you’ll be able to go online and read a comic that we’ve put together. Short stories mostly, but we’ll be trying a handful of different things in the hopes of learning handfuls more. Ideally, you’ll all like it. But, hopefully, feedback will be offered about what works, what doesn’t, what was cool, and what was stretching too far. And, through that process, I hope my exercise in writing can help me become a better editor.

And, regardless of the writing, this project will show off the skills of MacLean and Hill, which will be fun to see no matter what type of script this schlub puts together!

So, this is your invitation to join in on the process. To help me, through trying my hand at writing, grow and improve as an editor. Should be a wild ride!

See ya in the funny pages!

I don’t normally blog about social issues, but I posted this on my tumblr yesterday and, as the last graf suggests, spreading love around is a thing worth doing.

Regardless of who is responsible for the tragedy in Boston, which is an inarguably horrible event, I’ve seen an upsetting amount of anti-Muslim sentiment online in its wake. It’s unacceptable. We need to be better than that.

I’m your average white American male and I can’t begin to imagine what many Muslims and Muslim Americans are going through right now, but seeing how much misdirected hate is focused on them post-Boston is staggering.

One of my best friends in the whole world, one of the best people I’ve ever known, is Muslim American. I can’t comprehend what life is like for him today and I can’t stop hateful dummies from being awful, but I can let him know that he is loved and that he is an amazing person and that he has people to turn to for strength if he needs us. So I did. I sent a text and an email and told him exactly that.

I’m not trying to preach, and I don’t have any big answers. I probably don’t even understand issues of racial and religious bigotry as well as I should. But, I know a supportive and kind word from a friend can go a long way. One little thing probably can’t change the world, but it can make someone’s day a little better. That’s how I knew I could help my friend. I hope others are finding ways to help theirs. Spread that love, people! The world can always use more love.

This is no great piece of writing. It’s no powerful or eloquent message that should enlighten. This is just a simple idea that I needed to put into words, however clumsy, to remind myself that you’ve gotta focus on the good—in the world and that you can bring to it—especially when the world reminds you it can be a very scary place.Similar Posts:

Been meaning to write this blog post for about a year now, so some of the details might not be exactly right, but here’s the story…

I’m a huge fan of the Tremors movies. If you’ve known me for a while, odds are it’s come up at some point because I’m always happy to talk about those films! An awesome and campy quadrilogy of monster-filled westerns where you’ve got Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Michael Gross, as well as Reba McEntire, not to mention a bunch of big fucking worm monsters! It’s survival horror at it’s weirdest and I love it!

Long ago, I bought the 4-disc DVD set featuring all four Tremors movies for $20. Spending $20 on just the first film makes tons of sense to me, so grabbing all four for that price was a no-brainer. Though I’d owned the DVD set since college, I’d never sat down and watched the entire series back-to-back. So, last year, I did just that.

When I got to Tremors 3, in which—story-wise—the discovery of tremors, a.k.a. graboids, has lead to the popularity of the “true story” from the original film. And, unlike in real life, the tremors franchise in the Tremors-verse is hugely and wildly popular. Video games, theme parks, toys, and…

…COMICS!

And, upon closer inspection, I found…

…they were Dark Horse comics!

The next day at work, I went straight to Randy Stradley, longtime Star Wars editor and fount of Dark Horse and comics knowledge, and tried to get the story behind the comics. Here’s what I found…

Occasionally, film companies come to Dark Horse and asked us for comics they could feature in tv shows or movies. (This still happens now and again.) More rarely, we’ll strike a deal and create something original for the film. That was the case here. Presumably, as Dark Horse was the company that originally decided to pit the Predator against Aliens, the folks behind Tremors 3 thought DH would be a natural choice to produce some covers for Graboids, Shriekers, and Graboids Versus Shriekers comics. No actual comics were produced, but three covers were created.

Now Tremors, much like the Herculoids, was for many years one of my go to references/properties I liked to suggest as a hilarious licensed comic idea that I not-so-secretly would actually love to read. Knowing some covers existed, I couldn’t rest till I found them. I combed through Dark Horse’s digital archives and, luckily, tracked them down!

Randy didn’t work on these directly, if I recall correctly, so he didn’t know the artist’s name. If you recognize the work or signature, please let me know in the comments. I’d love to give someone credit for these rad pieces!

Also, in the photos of the book from movie above, you may notice that shriekers is spelled wrong. This is a prime example of why everything we publish now goes through our insanely talented proofreader, the invaluable Annie Gullion.

What I love about these covers, aside from the fact they are the closest I’ll ever come to reading sequential Tremors stories, is that they establish two characters and give you a bit of a narrative. I presume that Hat Guy and Blonde Woman helped defeat the first wave of graboids, then—like Fred Ward in Tremors 2—Hat Guy combatted the shriekers without his partner (Blonde Woman being the analogue for Kevin Bacon) from the first tale. Then, in a triumphant return, Blonde Woman was back for the big crossover between the graboids and the shriekers—which makes little sense as shriekers are born from graboids, but let’s not worry about that! That, or… Building off of the mythos of Tremors 2, in which you learn Valentine McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Rhonda LaBeck (Finn Carter), who are romantically attached at the end of the first Tremors, went on to find international fame with the discovery of graboids and became the basis for Hat Guy and Blonde Woman. And thus, became the main characters in a popular line of comics.

Just some thoughts that further solidify that not-so-secret desire to read Tremors comics.

We may never have Tremors comics available monthly, but we do have these cover illustrations, Tremors fans. And now, they’re online for all to enjoy!Similar Posts:

That’s right, Bale-entine’s Day is back, you lovebirds! It’s the holiday regularly known as Valentine’s Day, but with more pictures of Christian Bale and more Batman movie quotes!

For some background on this “hilarious” holiday, as well as a look at the first ever Bale-entines, head here for an historical recap of the invention of Bale-entines. You can check out 2011′s hunky entries/a> and 2012′s steamy cards, as well!

Just a heads up, 2013 may go down in history as the year Bale-entine’s officially became unfunny. I blame Dark Knight Rises. Too serious! Not enough silly quotes!

If you picked up the truly excellent Dark Horse Presents #20 last month, you had the distinct pleasure of reading a radical little story by Ulises Farinas and Erick Freitas. Comics Alliance wrote a great piece about the nostalgia-fueled pop culture-laced fun bomb of a comic that is Gamma, so I suggest you read what they said and then track down the three appearances of Dusty Keztchemal, monster trainer and coward.

Poring over Ulises’ work is like diving eyeballs first into into the Where’s Waldo books of my childhood that held my fascination for hours on end. Each time a page of Gamma came in, I spent a long time going over every awesome little detail.

Imagine my surprise and delight when the final, amazing page came in…

…and I saw…

…myself!

Over the past six months, I’ve been lucky enough to be referenced in two separate comics. Now, thanks to Ulises, there’s a third! I love that he grabbed Evan Shaner’s Pizza Party logo from Buddy Cops for this… just so damn great!

Thanks so much, Ulises! Definitely one of the raddest things that’s ever been done for me. Incredible!Similar Posts:

If you’ve been following me on twitter or tumblr recently, you’ve probably seen a few posts about Francesco Francavilla’s noir superhero masterpiece The Black Beetle. BB‘s the first comic that I’ve edited solo from the get go and it’s been a distinct pleasure working with someone as passionate and enthusiastic as Francesco. Dude’s pretty damn talented too. Pretty crazy to think that I own one of the lucky sets of eyeballs that gets to see his best work to date on a regular basis.

Francesco and I, as well as Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson, had high hopes for what originally felt like a niche comic. BB had oodles of potential, but truly great books get canceled all the time, so you never know. Thankfully, all the hard work FF poured into this baby paid off. It’s been extremely gratifying to see this little book live up to its greatest potential. And it’s still going!

So, for the sake of enjoying the moment and remembering this when I get old and gray, here’s some of the link journey that led us to this week, when we announced the sell out of issue #1.

-Back in August, we announced that the “Night Shift” story from Dark Horse Presents would be collected into a December #0 issue, followed up by a #1 in January.

-In November, we’d been slowly leaking out cover illustrations and spreading the word via social media. Heat was building, but slowly.

-Then, leading up to the premiere of #0, Francesco reached out to some fellow comics creators and asked if they could lend us a kind word. Then FF constructed a new lobby card-style teaser image every week for six weeks to help with promotion! They went over really well and built up a ton of heat around the #0 issue and the #1 issue heading to shops only a month later. Comics Alliance compiled all of the teasers in January, alongside a 10-page preview of the #1 issue.

-I also did a piece for the Dark Horse blog to help stoke the fire of interest around this rad new pulp comic.

-Thanks to the teasers, some very positive media coverage, and a bunch of awesome fans and curious comics readers who bought the book, the #0 issue sold out! HUGE!

-Between that news and the premiere of issue #1, letterer Nate Piekos wrote my favorite Dark Horse blog feature ever. Nate created a brand new font for The Black Beetle, a piece of art that perfectly complimented Francesco’s words and illustration, so I asked him to write about it for the blog. An interesting and fascinating process piece, it informed while spreading the good word about this rad book we were working on!

-Finally, issue #1 hit comic shops and—thankfully—fans and critics all loved it!

-We compiled the positive reviews and released them with some issue #2 teaser art (above) and leaked a bit more art to push the issue over the edge…

-Then, word came in that Diamond, our distributor, had sold out of The Black Beetle #1!

And that’s just what’s happened before issue #2 comes out later this month!

Big, massive, huge congrats to Francesco! This is his baby and he’s doing the finest work of his career, which makes all the success even sweeter. Many, many thanks to letterer extraordinaire Nate Piekos, as well. You wanna see love poured straight into a book by two exceptional professionals, look at what they’re doing on this book! Of course, big thanks goes to the fine folks in Dark Horse PR and Marketing. Also, last but farthest from least, thanks to every single enthusiastic fan, reviewer, and comic shop owner who read this book, enjoyed it and passed it along or spread the word.

It’s been a trip, guys!

FF, I owe you a beer or nine at Emerald City Comicon! This is cause for celebration, man!

…A LIST OF THINGS THAT I READ IN 2012!

Get excited!

Two years ago, I started doing this instead of a “Best of” list because I’d read a ton, but so much of it was older stuff—stuff that hadn’t come out in 2010. I liked compiling the list, seeing how much I read, when during the year I read most, what kind of trends my reading went through, etc etc… Without initially realizing it, I’d figured out a pretty interesting way to study myself as a reader. So, I did it again two years ago and again last year.

This time around, each completed book was added to a running list before I put it away on the shelf. Adding the book to a list, I think, led to an extra sense of completion and accomplishment each time I finished a book. I usually opened a new one and started reading it as soon as the old one was added to the list.

Anywho, here’s a list of the 70 graphic novels and books I read last year. It was mostly pleasure reading, but some of it was for work…

I completed more than one prose book this year. In fact, I read seven! Bam! Been a while since I’ve been that productive in the novel reading department.

2012 Reading List: NOVELS/PROSE
JANUARY
A Game of Thrones [Bantam Books]

MARCH
The Hunger Games [Scholastic]

AUGUST
The Rook [Little, Brown and Company]

NOVEMBER
The Big Sleep [Vintage Crime/Black Lizard]

DECEMBER
Farewell, My Lovely [Vintage Crime/Black Lizard]
Catching Fire [Scholastic]

All in all, I think this year was about consuming a lot of books and trying to make sure they were different kinds of books. I’ve had some pretty superhero-heavy years, a very Dark Horse-heavy year (I did a lot of brushing up on the DH stuff during my first year on the job.), some personal research-heavy years, but this one seemed to feature a lot of mixing it up. I don’t know if it was necessarily due to the content this year, but I enjoyed reading more this year. Throwing some prose into the mix after a long dry spell of novels really infused some life into my reading habits. It felt like I was stretching some old muscles and it felt good. It made the world of books feel a bit more infinite than it felt over the past two years when I’d become so focused on comics—something that felt essential to succeeding at work. This year, I definitely learned that disparate reading can be the most rewarding way to read, especially when reading is part of your job.

I’m curious to see what new reading habits 2013 will lead to. The current trend is grabbing any book off the shelf that has a bookmark stabbed into and finishing that sucker off. It kinda feels like cheating, adding them to the list, but it feels good to take care of unfinished business.

Remember, back in September, when I relayed a story about how artist Evan Shaner had added a Jim Gibbons-related Easter egg to Buddy Cops, a story appearing in Dark Horse Presents? Well, that ain’t the only Jim Gibbons comic reference anymore!

Yeah, this is about as self-serving and indulgent as blog posts get, but hey, I’m in a comic book… again! It’s awesome and I have to share! I HAVE TO!

While working on the first chapter of Captain Midnight a few months back, artist Victor Ibáñez sent in his inks for page one and something that writer Joshua Williamson hadn’t put in the script found it’s way onto the page…

Yep! That young sailor’s last name is Gibbons! My first comic cameo!

I was pretty psyched that Victor had taken it upon himself to add me as an extra in this comic. So excited, in fact, that I immediately sent the page over to Williamson and Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie. A) This was the first page of Victor’s gorgeous inks, which they needed to see asap for work reasons, but also, B) I was pretty excited to share this Easter egg that wouldn’t see print for months. Here’s a paraphrased version of how the emails went…

ME: Check out the first page of excellent inks from Victor. And check out the dude in panel 2!
JOSH: Ha! That’s great! You should have Victor add a mustache to that guy!
ME: I’m so tempted to do that!
SCOTT: Go for it.

And that’s the story of how Victor Ibáñez received the most extraneous inking note of—at least—my comics career.

Thankfully, Victor was kind enough to indulge us.

With the mustache added, Victor moved on with his work and that led to another moment for a certain mustachioed navy man.

Here are the final pages, featuring colors by Ego and lettering by Nate Piekos of Blambot®.

Pretty darn cool. Thanks again, Victor! And thanks to Scott and Josh for encouraging a bit of madness.

In 2011, the Ministry of Mustache Growth & Management raised an astounding $20,700. I hoped we could rise as high in the fundraising this year, but was very skeptical. I mean, last year, we aimed for $10K and somehow made it to $20K. I didn’t think we could be that lucky two years in a row.

Of course, luck had nothing to do with it. Between our 80 members and all of ours/their generous and supportive friends and family, we raised a grand total of $24,434! Incredible.

The Midwest led the pack at $15,251 with the Northwest steadfastly supporting with $8,723. On top of that, eight of our members made it to the platinum club by raising $1,000, and we had 60 of our 80 members raise $10 or more… Yeah, that’s a pretty successful year!

Last year, I awarded my co-captain and brother Dan Gibbons with the unofficial M.M.G.M. MVP award as he, as a first time captain, led his team to $12K. This year, I gotta give it to Peyton Manning look-a-like Joe Harrington for reaching $3,124 as a first time mo bro. Nicely done, Joe!

And, our last big accomplishment, both teams dominated their regional networks (for a while, at least). M.M.G.M. Northwest led Portland-based fundraising when the trophy for the highest fund-raising team was awarded on November 30 (though we’ve since been surpassed), and the Midwest topped Chicago’s fundraising—an honor they’ve retained. Teamwork, as they say, makes the dream work.

All in all, another crazy successful, awesomely amazing, and super fun mustache season! Thanks so much to all of the amazing folks who joined the Ministry this season! We could not have done it without your enthusiastic and tireless mustache efforts all month! And, thanks to everyone who donated or spread the word! Every little bit helps, and all those little bits added up to a helluva lot.

Now, indulge yourself in a whole mess of mustache photos!
