THIS IS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE I AM SUPER EXCITED BY THIS SCOTT PILGRIM TRAILER!

I’ve haven’t blogged much about my great love for “Scott Pilgrim,” but with the first trailer hitting the internetz for the upcoming Edgar Wright movie adaptation of the outstandingly great comic series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, well… I need to gush!

Here’s the long and short of it…

One of the books.

“Scott Pilgrim” is a series of black-and-white graphic novels about a twenty-something Canadian slacker who plays in a band named Sex Bomb-Omb, loves video games and must fight the seven evil exes of his new girlfriend Ramona Flowers in order to date her. The books are hilarious, chock-full of awesome fights that will pump you up and incredible, funny video games references that drum up excellent amounts of nostalgia while continuing the aforementioned hilarity. Also, it provides the most fun you can score on Amazon for less than $9, so that’s another big check in the awesome column. Other than that, all you need to know is that the books are great and you should read them.

I first had my interest piqued about “Scott Pilgrim” early on in my Wizard days when Kiel Phegley was giddily blogging about early casting rumors for the adaptation on the now defunct Indie Jones. I’d heard nothing but good things about the books, and seeing a comic reader of discerning tastes like Mr. Phegley getting psyched about this film was all the more reason to check out the books as soon as I could. Of course, that meant I made a mental note to read them which I promptly forgot about for a year.

And so, a year later, more and more “Scott Pilgrim” movie news was trickling out and features about the books and movies were being discussed for Wizard, so I took the plunge and bought the first volume. I gobbled it up quickly, thoroughly enjoying it from cover to cover and then bought the other four volumes which I consumed with equal voracity.

Oddly enough, around this time a three-page feature for Wizard by Mr. Phegley (who had left the company months and months earlier, but was still a regular freelancer) came across my desk for editing. As I had just read all of “Scott Pilgrim”—or was in the process of finishing Volume 5, I can’t quite remember—and was still glowing with the initial “Holy crap, this is so great!” excitement that enjoying great comics for the first time brings, I luckily caught the fact that the design department had mismatched about 70 percent of the characters with the actors who played them, an even more fortuitous catch considering no one else at Wizard at the time had ever read the books and Kiel would likely not have seen a proof of the article before it went to print.

The poster for the upcoming movie.

Anywho, weird journalism memories aside, I enjoyed all the “Scott Pilgrim” books so much that most other upcoming movies in 2010 seem inconsequential in comparison to what I was hoping would be an exceptionally amazing adaptation of “SP” hitting theaters in August. After seeing the trailer that came out today, I feel pretty confident that I will have a new favorite movie in about five months.

I’m pretty sure this trailer is already the best comic book movie of 2010. And boy, I am so super psyched to see this movie I better just stop typing now before I go into an all-caps-zero-punctuation frenzy of overly excited blogging.

Good gravy, I'm excited!
